Non-Jews are Adopting Ketubahs in their Wedding Ceremonies

Our planet might just be a speck in the infinite universe, but it’s massive for us. It holds a spectrum of cultures and religions with different customs and traditions. Each has their unique way of celebrating both happy and sad occasions. With the world becoming more connected than ever, so have our societies and values. We’ve all learnt and borrowed something from different cultures, and one thing that’s winning non-Jews from Judaism is the ketubah.

A few years back, The New York Times published a report on non-Jews embracing ketubahs in their wedding rituals. Not interfaith couples, but couples who liked the meaning of a ketubah and its significance in life of the promise you make with God.

Some Christian couples have adopted ketubahs because of their shared spiritual history. The Austins were one such Christian couple who signed a ketubah after exchanging vows and rings. “Embracing this Jewish tradition just brings a richness that we miss out on sometimes as Christians when we don’t know the history,” said Mrs. Austin, 29, a business manager for AT&T. “Jesus was Jewish, and we appreciate his culture, where he came from.”

Gentiles embracing ketubahs coincides with recent social trends in the rise of Christian Zionism, the increasing numbers of interfaith marriages, and the search for spirituality in the customs of multiple religions. Because of the rise in awareness of Jewish practices, many non-Jews have adopted other Jewish traditions like the holding of a Passover Seder, kosher food and learning about kabbalah.

The Austins became aware of ketubahs when Mrs. Austin’s elder sister had one at her wedding a few years earlier. She loved how the contract is a permanent reminder of their covenant with God. As she says, “One of the characteristics of a covenant is a tangible sign. And this piece of paper, this beautiful piece of art, is the sign of our covenant.”

    Balancing an Interfaith Marriage

    by admin

Here at Interfaith Ketubahs, we mostly write and post a lot about wedding ideas, planning inspirations and tips and Ketubahs of course! This week we thought we’d take a moment to share an awesome article and video about after the big party and signing of the Ketubah — when life happens. Afterall, the wedding is just the first step and mark of the beginning of the rest of your lives together. Then comes everyday life, work and for many, children! And let’s be brutally honest here for a second. For many, all of those different factors can be difficult on their own… that’s life when you’re married!

All of those on top of being an Interfaith couple and family can be even harder and more tricky. But we’ve found (like many other awesome couples out there!), that striking that perfect balance of respect, understanding and unconditional love can create and unlock even more exciting and new sides of your relationship with your wife or husband.

HuffPost Religion recently interviewed Susan Katz Miller, author of Being Both: Embracing Two Religions in One Interfaith Family. She had a ton of insight and important things to say regarding Interfaith marriages. Her biggest secret to a successful Interfaith marriage?

“shared values and a lot of love…”

Watch the whole interview here and tell us what you think!

    Interfaith Wedding & Ceremony Inspiration

    by admin
    No comments yet

Sometimes all it takes is a little inspiration to plan the big day. Especially if you’re planning an Interfaith wedding… okay, that can take a LOT of inspiration! Depending on you and your partner, planning something like this can be uncharted territory. We tend to meet Interfaith couples from every end of the spectrum — some couples don’t include much of anything interfaith into their wedding, except maybe a few different traditions (like the Ketubah!). While other couples want to two different ceremonies for each of their beliefs.

Either way, we love the Knot’s Interfaith album for that very reason. It includes a great variety of couples with all different styles of weddings and beliefs! From extra small details to officiants and photography — these real weddings are the perfect way to become inspired and excited. Click to see The Knot’s Interfaith photos here!
